Hilary Rice is a weaver, spinner, dyer, stitcher, as well as a potter...
"When I was young, I dreamed of being able to make everything I would need... not as a career, but in my free time. Several decades before there was such a thing as "The Slow Movement", I made things at a snail's pace - everything I made took a long time.
Now, after a lifetime of learning, I am delighted to spend my days creating beautiful things and sharing the results.
I take pride in my work and I strive for excellence.
I currently have three looms that I weave on regularly: My 'house loom' is a 36" Schacht 8-shaft Mighty Wolf. I have recently added a 63" 12-shaft Glimakra countermarch loom & an 8-shaft 22" Macomber loom to my studio.
My sewing machine is an Elna 7200 and I use a wide variety of thread brands, including Madeira & Canadian-made Wonderfil.
My preference is always to make something 'from scratch'... so rather than use commercially produced fabric, I will dye or paint a natural cotton, linen or silk. I enjoy the entire process of washing a sheep's fleece, carding the clean wool & then spinning it into yarn which I can dye any colour I choose. I have over 2 decades of experience colouring fibre.
I was very fortunate to be gifted many of the items needed for a pottery studio! And so more recently, I have returned to a much earlier love - throwing my own pots. So once again, starting with the most basic ingredient: clay.
The resulting pieces I make are truly unique!
