Joanne Rich

Stop #1: The Hub at the Pavilion, Tweed Memorial Park

Sculpted Light: Natural material lanterns by Joanne Rich

Joanne Rich is an artist and papermaker. She makes paper from garden plants, and then uses her handmade paper as materials for her art pieces.

Joanne Rich left advertising amidst the 2008 recession. She was happy applying her creativity to branding campaigns, but not with her part in mass production. She decided to revisit the art of lantern making, a Chinese tradition symbolizing happiness and prosperity.

With Ontario Arts Council’s support, she attended a Japanese papermaking workshop at Kozo Studio. With additional support from Canada Council for the Arts, she continued her research on natural dyeing at Mamie’s schoolhouse. Her favourite papermaking fibre is the common milkweed. She grows large numbers of milkweeds for fibres, incidentally benefiting endangered Monarch butterflies.
